The Enduring Colonial Legacy

The enactment of the three new criminal laws provided an opportunity to create a postcolonial framework focused on reform, restitution, and rehabilitation. Although it is a positive step forward, it fails to fully detach from the colonial foundations of the legal system or redefine the approach to crime and punishment in India.This opinion was published in Economic & Political Weekly on March 16, 2024.
